Female Choreographers of Color in Ballet

The Female Choreographers of Color in Ballet (FCCB) Lab is a transformational platform for dancemakers whose voices remain underrepresented in ballet choreography. The FCCB Lab creates greater awareness of these artists, increases access to their work, and encouragesthe amplification of their narratives in ballet.

The 2021 FCCB Lab was hosted in partnership with The Joyce Theater Foundation from October - November, 2021. After their time in #TheLab with our company of eight dancers, the choreographers presented excerpts of their work as part of the Studio 5 series at New York City Center.

This year’s choreographers were chosen by five leaders in the field:

Theresa Ruth Howard, Founder/Curator of the Memoirs of Blacks in Ballet
Virginia Johnson, Artistic Director, Dance Theater of Harlem
Lourdes Lopez, Artistic Director, Miami City Ballet
Renae Williams Niles, Chief Content and Engagement Officer, LA Phil
Janet Wong, Associate Artistic Director, New York Live Arts
